Breakfast under the cedar, with Provence stretched out below.
Château de Varenne is a 17th-century château in Sauveterre, just outside Avignon, and one of the cosiest places we've stayed. You walk in under huge plane trees towards a stone house with blue shutters, past potted orange trees and white wrought-iron chairs in the shade.
Inside it's all old stone, antiques and a curving staircase with an iron railing, with a sleepy dog stretched out on the cool tiles. The staff were lovely the whole stay, and we spent the warm hours of the day by the pool.
Breakfast is a highlight: brioche, fresh bread in checked napkins, homemade jams and bowls of fruit, set out in a room with flowers painted on the green walls.
Our tip: take your breakfast out to the terrace and sit by the balustrade under the big cedar, with the view over the valley.
