Days by the pool, sunsets on the rooftop.
Hotel Ferola sits just back from the sea in Polhena on Sri Lanka's south coast. The heart of it is a huge turquoise pool surrounded by frangipani trees, wooden sun loungers and pink umbrellas, with the ocean peeking over the palms.
We spent our days reading on the loungers and slipping in and out of the water. In the evening the pool lights up, the restaurant glows behind it, and the sky over the garden turns soft pink. Up on the rooftop there are string lights, wicker chairs and nothing but ocean beyond the railing, and our shower stood among big banana leaves.
Our tip: book a room facing the pool, and head up to the rooftop just before sunset.
